Manager Harold Soria broke out his old timer lineup for Wednesday's game against the Bums, with all three 60 year olds (Harold Soria, Tony Telles and John "Hugo" Hughes ) in the starting lineup. Soria claimed the mound for himself and hurled the Bugs to victory. But it was some old fashioned Bugball that won the game for Soria and the team.
The Bugs got off to an uncharacteristic early lead, scoring 5 in the bottom of the first inning after Soria held the Bums scoreless in the top half. The Bums did briefly tie the game in the 3rd 5-5 before the Bugs threw up another 5 spot. The game went back and forth until one of the young Bums took out shortstop Mike Ruberte with a very hard slide. This reporter couldn't say it wasn't a clean play, but it was highly unnecessary as the out was already recorded. Regardless, Ruberte held onto the ball despite going "ass over teakettle", but now the Bugs were charged up. In particular, Big Steve Temores and the hall of famer himself, Chuck Chapa, ran the bases with energy and purpose. The infield was beginning to look like a war zone, with bodies lying about. The Bums suddenly were not too pleased that they had woken a sleeping dog as they did not appreciate getting a bit of their own medicine. Words were exchanged between slumping first baseman Johnson and the Bum's entire dugout (propriety doesn't allow for these types of words to be used on the Bugbuster website), followed by Johnson discussing pleasantries with the 2nd base ump. In the end, tempers cooled down. The pitcher Soria was happy he did not have to tackle the 245 lb Johnson, noting that he is much bigger than the last time he had to restrain him, some 20 years previous. This game had the feel of classic Bugbuster games of decades past.
The Bums did manage to tie the score again 12-12 in the top of the 6th. With time running out, Johnson led off the bottom of the 6th with a sharp single to right center. Knowing that the speedster Ben Foutch had made the last out, Johnson called for a courtesy runner. When John Garza banged his second hit of the game, Ben was a blur going from first to third, bringing the winning run one base away. The Bums had no choice but to walk Billy Minor, whose two previous hits had put him at 500 for his illustrious career. (Billy became the 9th Bugbuster to reach this historic plateau.) So the game was left in the hands of Mr. Bubuster himself, Harold Soria. Soria hit a slow roller towards first. With the speedy Foutch breaking on contact, the Bugs won on a bang-bang play.
Bob Sparacino and Steve Temores each had three hits, while Chuck Chapa and Mike Ruberte each contributed 3 RBI. The Bugs played errorless ball throughout the contest. The game had huge playoff implication as it put the Bugs back into the mix for a playoff spot, evening their record at 2-2.
